Around the World in 717 Days

Posted on Thursday, January 23, 2014

CHANDLER, ARIZONA – When we left the United States in November of 2011 we were in search of an adventure. We didn’t intend on traveling for any finite period of time. There was no big list of countries that we planned to visit, and we definitely didn’t intend to circumnavigate the world. Every day we made decisions regarding which direction to head or where to spend the next week or month and every day we were surprised by what laid around the corner. The constant discovery and unending challenges and lessons are what made our trip worth continuing. Combined, they are why our journey lasted much longer than either of us (or our family and friends, for that matter) imagined.

Snapshot Series: Primates Around the Globe

Posted on Friday, November 15, 2013

Photographing wildlife is one of our absolute favorite activities no matter where we are. This post showcases some of the many primates that we snapped pictures of during our travels in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and the Indian sub-continent. Observing their expressions, mannerisms and behavior up close is astonishing and reveals just how closely related we all really are. We thoroughly enjoyed watching these animals up close and laughing at their human-like behavior – and quite often mis-behavior.

Snapshot Series: Food Around the Globe

Posted on Monday, October 7, 2013

Yes, we need it to survive, but food is also something we live for, searching out specific cuisines and culinary experiences. When traveling food is also a tool for getting to know a country. It is a method to connect with local people. Food is even a source for gaining insights into cultures and their histories. While we may not remember every detail of every meal there are many that stand out; we can easily recollect where we were, who we dined with, the scents whirling around us and even who prepared it and served it to us. Food has a power over us. We travel for the food.

Indian Motorcycle Diaries: Ultimate Himalayan Ride

Posted on Wednesday, July 10, 2013

VASHISHT, INDIA – As a grand finale to our months exploring northern India and Nepal we headed to the far north of the sub-continent for the ultimate motorcycle adventure: a three week circuit to Leh, Ladakh – “Land of High Passes.” We were drawn to Ladakh based on everything we’d heard about the area: the high-altitude deserts, isolated roads, thrilling river crossings, mesmerizing glaciers, challenging road conditions, and snow dripped peaks. With just under three months of riding under our belts we decided to put our fears and doubts aside and do what many motorcyclists only dream of doing: riding on these grandiose and demanding Himalayan roads.

Snapshot Series: Road Hazards of India

Posted on Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Cruising down Indian roads, in any vehicle, can be some of the most interesting and adventurous times traveling through the country. Certainly the sites and scenery can be breathtaking, but more often than not the conditions of the roads and the many, many unexpected things that may occupy the lanes are what will be most surprising. During our personal experience of motorcycling on Indian highways we witnessed the gamut of road hazards from the commonplace to the truly bizarre. While some of these are difficult to snap photographs of (for example: cars speeding in the wrong direction, trucks pulling out in front of our bike, and massive unmarked speed bumps hidden in shadows) we have done our best to capture and share a few of these so as to give an idea of what driving on Indian roads is like. It is possible to have an amazing time and still leave the country (relatively) unscathed. Just keep your eyes peeled for the insanity that exists on India’s living highways!

The Ultimate How-To Guide for Foreign Travelers

Riding a motorcycle on Indian roads can definitely be a complex, at times overwhelming, and always interesting activity. In our opinion, however, the freedom a bike offers a traveler makes it all worth it. Our experience touring India on two wheels gave us goosebumps on a regular basis and has come to be one of the highlights of our extensive travel experiences.
